GROWING FARM TO SCHOOL IN LOUISIANA
The National Farm to School Network in partnership with Louisiana Farm to School and Market Umbrella, is bringing a wave of Seed Change to Louisiana for significant farm to school growth.
In March 2015, the National Farm to School Network (NFSN) launched Seed Change in Kentucky, Louisiana and Pennsylvania with the generous support of the Walmart Foundation. Through outreach, training and mini grants to fund projects on the ground, NFSN hopes to increase farm to school activities locally by 10 percent, bringing more local food, more school gardens, and more food and farm education to students and communities across each state.
WHAT IS SEED CHANGE?
Seed Change is an 18-month, $1.5 million project funded by the Walmart Foundation addressing barriers to farm to school in states that are ripe for significant growth.
Statewide outreach efforts, trainings and technical assistance will be coordinated locally by Louisiana Farm to School in partnership with the National Farm to School Network and Market Umbrella in Louisiana to create a robust farm to school network for long-term program sustainability.
Louisiana Project activities:
Grants: A total of 32 school sites received $5,000 mini grants to support the implementation of concrete farm to school activities and build school-wide support and enthusiasm for increased engagement and associated positive outcomes. These will include trainings, school gardens, field trips and local food purchases, as well as development of in-state networking opportunities and technical assistance for teachers, school lunch professionals and farmers.
Demonstration Sites: Two model school districts with strong farm to school programming have been selected in each state of Kentucky, Louisiana and Pennsylvania to serve as demonstration sites and training hubs for other school districts in the state to visit and learn from. Mini grantees will travel to these sites throughout the year for farm to school trainings, and to meet and learn from their colleagues across the state.
Louisiana Demonstration Sites: Lafayette Parish School System and Richland Parish School System
Outreach and Training: National Farm to School Network State lead will coordinate outreach and training activities, create information resources and develop a strong network of experts to rapidly expand farm to school activities across the state.
