The deadline for Congress to reauthorize the Child Nutrition Act (CNR) is today, October 22nd. Included in the CNR is the Farm to School Act 2015. The adoption of the Farm to School Act will build on the innumerable successes of farm to school efforts in recent years. In allocating an additional $100 million in farm to school funding over the coming decade, the Farm to School Act will strengthen and expand the program's capacity immensely. Beyond extending the scope and reach of existing farm to school programming, this additional funding will work to:
- Fully include preschools, summer food service program sites, and after school programs in the USDA Farm to School grant program
- Increase access among tribal schools to farm-fresh and traditional foods, especially from tribal producers
- Improve program participation from beginning, veteran and socially disadvantaged farmers and ranchers
Join us, the National Farm to School Network, National Sustainable Agriculture Coalition and food system advocates from across the country today (Thursday, October 22nd) for a Big Day of Farm to School Action! How? Share a photo of your kids in the school garden, tweet at your legislators, hold a local food taste test, and tell the world why farm to school is important to your community and why it needs increased support in the Child Nutrition Act reauthorization (CNR) happening this fall.
